The AbbVie Experiential Internship Program

As an AbbVie Experiential Intern, you'll participate in a paid, ten to twelve-week summer program that is focused on providing students with robust projects throughout the summer. This intern role will be located at AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC) in Worcester, MA. Throughout the summer, there are planned development and networking activities at ABC. Eligible students should be able to work for a minimum of 9 weeks.

Department Overview – Science & Technology

The Science & Technology (S&T) organization within AbbVie Operationsleads the optimization, validation, implementation, continuous improvement and global technical support for therapeutic proteins. The S&TSummer Internship Program is a paid summer opportunity that provides students with robust projects based on business need. Students will do meaningful work that has a real impact on our business and patients worldwide. Possible internships are in the following departments:

  • Process Sciences : focusing on first-in-human, early-and late-stage manufacturing, Process Sciences develops, scales up, and validates best-in-class manufacturing processes. The department applies high-throughput technology, state-of-the-art assays and characterization techniques and modeling, to advance clinical development and commercialization of biologic compounds. Key groups include:

  • Cell Culture

  • Purification

  • Cell Line Development

  • Manufacturing Sciences: focusing on late-stage and commercial manufacturing, Manufacturing Sciences develops, understands, implements, troubleshoots, and improves our robust processes and technologies to meet AbbVie’s quality, compliance, financial and innovation goals for the benefit of our patients. In addition, the department supports regulatory needs and provides support for product lifecycle management. Key groups include:

  • Cell Culture

  • Purification

  • Scale-Up Laboratory

  • Protein Analytics : responsibilities include development of analytical methods for transfer to Quality Control and performance of extended characterization of proteins using state-of-the-art instrumentation for evaluation of primary, secondary and tertiary structures of proteins. The department also supports development activities of the other groups within the S&T organization and provides analytical support for late-stage, R&D, and discovery projects. Key groupsinclude:

  • Biomolecular Interaction Group for bioassay and testing

  • High Throughput Analytics and Automation Group for monoclonal antibody (mAb) program development, testing, and automation

  • New Modality Group for non-mAb program development and testing

  • Analytical Characterization Group for characterization (mass spectrometry and biophysical) and testing

  • Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control (CMC ): the CMC department is responsible for planning and tracking the advancement of our biologics pipeline to commercialization. The work begins at the handoff of a candidate biologic from R&D and includes leading both the technical aspects of bulk drug substances or biologic intermediate manufacturing and regulatory filing documentation to achieve Asset Development Team (ADT) timelines. The CMC department works cross functionally across Operations and R&D to enable timely delivery of drug supply for clinical trials and positions AbbVie for successful IND and marketing application filings.

The S&T summer interns will be located at AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC) in Worcester, MA. Throughout the summer, there are planned development and networking activities at ABC. Eligible students should be able to work for a minimum of 9 weeks with self-provided housing for the duration of the program.

Basic:

  • Completed at least one year of college education before beginning internship

  • Must be enrolled in school the semester following your internship

  • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s program in a scientific or engineering discipline (preferably Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Biosciences/Bioengineering)

  • Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0/4.0

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (students on an F1 visa with CPT can be accommodated).

  • Minimum 9-week commitment

Preferred:

  • GPA 3.5/4.0

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills

  • Proven leadership skills

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment

  • Strong sense of urgency and self-motivated desire to achieve

  • Must have a “results-oriented” work ethic and a positive, “can-do” attitude
