As the scientific thought leader for the AbbVie Foundational Immunology Discovery group, the Vice President, Foundational Immunology is responsible for championing the vision and execution of translational immunology insights to identify and select novel pathways and targets that have the potential to deliver transformative efficacy for patients in the Rheumatology, Dermatology and Gastroenterology areas. This leadership position will have deep understanding of Immunology and the application of genetic/genomic technologies to define the molecular dysfunctions that lead to immunologically-driven diseases. The overall responsibility is to drive the science to gain a deep understanding of disease(s), which can then be translated into selection and validation of high quality target mechanisms for drug discovery through the use of access to human patient samples and clinical data, cutting edge molecular technologies & computational excellence.
Under your scientific vision and leadership, the Foundational Immunology group will generate compelling, data-driven rationales supporting the central role of target pathways, the most appropriate means to modulate those mechanisms for therapeutic benefit, and the feasibility to do so. The individual will attract and direct a multidisciplinary team of approximately 50+ world-class scientists based in Cambridge and Worcester, MA. In addition, he/she will leverage a global network within research community to establish and direct multiple research collaborations with the leading academic and biotech laboratories.
This individual will join the Immunology Discovery Leadership Team and shares accountability for the success of the Immunology Pipeline at AbbVie. He/she will also participate in providing scientific insights that advance compelling opportunities through the pipeline, including access to appropriate cellular and animal models, selection of optimal translational strategies and introduction of new technologies. This individual will advise on and share accountability for transitions across major drug discovery/development milestones, will access and evaluate the scientific merits of potential biotechnology alliances, help to extract value from AbbVie’s participation in public-private consortia, consider and evaluate both internal pipeline and external licensing opportunities and guide AbbVie’s research alliances and collaboration efforts in the defined area of diseases.

MD/PhD , MD, or PhD in related field
A minimum of 15 years of post-doctoral experience in Immunology with specific research interests focused on chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases; experience with mucosal immunology is a plus
A demonstrated passion to translate molecular genotyping and phenotyping into pathway and target identification and validation
A widely recognized reputation of innovation and ability to recognize transformational opportunities, including an exceptional publication record, demonstrated ability to obtain significant funding for innovative research proposals, influential participation in study sections, membership on editorial boards, and intellectual property generation.
An extensive network of connections with leading investigators in the global science field actively supporting open exchange of expert opinions and visions of technology.
Prior pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience including the advancement of innovative new approaches to early development is a plus
Track record of attracting, retaining and developing talent. In addition to post-doctoral and graduate students, prior experience in supervising mentoring/supervising senior, independent scientist is expected.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in interacting with executive-level management.
The ability to achieve results in accordance with a research plan and timelines without formal authority in a cross-disciplinary academic/industrial environment.
