As an AbbVie Summer Intern, you will participate in a paid, ten-week summer program that is focused on providing students with robust projects throughout the summer. As an intern, you will be located at our office in Sunnyvale, CA.

General Position:

Programming departmentsummer internship provides the opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the role of Programming in drug development as well as broad exposure to various roles in Biometry. The program fosters growth and development of its participants by providing networking opportunities, career development and involvement in projects that makes a significant contribution to Programming department. This program introduces the interns to have Programmers as their mentors and helps them to engage in seminars and discussions conducted in the department. The Statistical Programming department seeks a motivated R Programming intern with experience in developing interactive web-based data driven applications deployed through the RStudio Shiny Linux server. This position is open to college student who is actively looking for a summer intern position.

Assignment Details:

  • At least 1-yearexperience in R programming and use of CRAN or Bioconductor libraries

  • Develop data andanalysis apps and web services using R and Shiny

  • Python, ArtificialIntelligent and Machine Learning.

  • Help review andsummarize statistical and medical journals.

  • Assist in data outputQC and checks

  • Assist in organizingstatistical reference files and statistical library


  • Completed at least one year of college education before beginning internship

  • Currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited University graduate program

  • Undergraduate or Graduate Level Student

  • Be an active student in good standing at an accredited university

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (students on an F1 visa with CPT can be accommodated).


  • Statistics coursework relevant to internship scope of requirements.

  • Experience with rCharts, ggplot2, reshape2, dplyr and R Markdown packages is a plus.

  • Experience with d3js for creating tables and graph.

  • Familiar with relevant operating systems, e.g. UNIX, Linux.

  • Programming experience with SAS and SQL is a plus

  • Has knowledge in statistical software packages (i.e. SAS, R or JMP).

  • Experience with Shiny, ggplot2, tidyverse and R Markdown packages is a plus.

  • Excellent knowledge of following technologies: JavaScript, CSS, Web application, machine learning, artificial intelligent technologies.

Final Presentation

Each Intern is expected to prepare a short presentation to their team to share what they have learned through their internship and how they hope their new knowledge will help them secure their future career. Presentations should be 10 - 15 minutes long and should include visual aid (posters or PowerPoint).
