Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.

AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at AbbVie in Redwood City, CA location.

Purpose:

Conceive and execute novel scientific research or development that achieves projects and area goals. Generate new scientific proposals and lead those efforts. Investigate, identify, develop, and optimize new methods and techniques. Act as a lead scientist in his/her area of expertise and critically evaluate relevant scientific and regulatory advances and integrate this knowledge into research or development programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for IO target identification and biological molecule development

  • Leading and executing scientific research of early stage immune oncology discovery programs

  • Ability to resolve key project hurdles with available information from literature and internal experts

  • Ability to generate scientific proposal and maintain a high level of productivity in the lab

  • Excellent skills in scientific writing for internal reports, external presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • May mentor/supervise small group of scientists and evaluate the performance of those individuals if management skills demonstrated

Qualifications

For the Senior Scientist I level, we require:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no experience necessary.

For the Senior Scientist II level, we require:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 12 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 10 years of experience, PhD and typically 4 years of experience in the area of immunology or tumor biology.

For both levels, we require:

  • Strong capability of doing multicolor flowcytometry analysis, proficiency in performing data clustering with different software and familiar with single cell related technology.

  • Excellent skills in conventional immune assays and capability of developing comprehensive culture models containing immune cells and tumor cells.

  • Experiences in using in vivo model to test IO therapeutics, such as syngeneic model, xenograft/PDX model, and NSG mouse model with human cell implanted.

  • Drug development experiences in fusion protein, monoclonal antibodies, bi-specific molecules and antibody drug conjugate will be a plus.

  • Effective writer and communicator of research or other regulatory materials.
