Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.

AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at AbbVie in Redwood City, CA location.

We are seeking a proactive and highly motivated individual to join AbbVie’s rapidly expanding Immuno-Oncology team. The successful candidate will participate in projects discovering and defining mechanisms of action of novel drugs using both murine tool reagents as well as human lead candidate molecules. The role will include troubleshooting assays, designing novel approaches, organizing and analyzing data, and participation in group and departmental meetings. The team is highly collaborative and the successful candidate will be able to manage contributions to many projects in distinct research areas. In vitro and ex vivo assays utilizing both mouse cells and human cells will be required. Background in flow cytometry, western blot analysis, cellular transfections, molecular biology and other common cell biology and immunological laboratory assays is required. Knowledge and experience with current technologies for support of immunological in vitro assays is highly desirable. A strong background in immunology and/or cancer biology is preferred. The successful candidate will be a technical expert that will independently investigate, identify, develop and optimize new methods and techniques to address critical project needs. Reading and adapting the primary literature to accomplish assignments is expected. Demonstrated mastery of broad range of experimental techniques and methods of data analysis are expected.

  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the lab and/or pilot plant.

  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, controlled drug and radioactive compounds, GxP compliance, and animal care where applicable.

For the Scientist I, we require:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education with typically 5 years of experience, or Master’s Degree or equivalent education with typically two years of experience.

For the Scientist II, we require:

  • BS or equivalent education with typically 7 or more years of experience or MS or equivalent education with typically 5 or more years of experience.

For both levels, we require :

  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute and interpret critical experiments to answer scientific questions.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn, understand and master new experimental techniques.

  • Ability to multitask and work within timelines.
