Primary Job Function:
Conceiveand execute medicinal chemistry research and development that achieves projectand area goals.
Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry is an essentialrequirement of this position to drive the SAR optimization cycle to achieve projectgoals.
Expected to generate new scientific synthetic and medicinal chemistryproposals and lead those efforts.
Investigate, identify, develop, and optimizenew methods/ techniques.
Act as a lead scientist in his/her area of expertiseon one or more projects.
Critically evaluate relevant scientific advances andintegrate this knowledge into research programs.

Maintain ahigh level of productivity in the laboratory setting.
Demonstrate the abilityto resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizingavailable information and technical expertise.
Proactively seek out newinformation in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s)as well as the overall program.
Publish research in peer-reviewed journals andpresent work at scientific conferences.
Effective writer and communicator ofresearch or other regulatory materials.
Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientificstandards, and safe laboratory practices for self and reporting staff, if any.
Participate in establishing project goals, defining short and long-termscientific strategies, and contribute to the generation of project-relateddocuments and presentations.
May supervise one or more direct reports and proactivelyengage in their development.
Keep accurate and current records of researchand/or project related activities according to AbbVie policies.
Internal/External Contacts and Interactions:
Use externalinformation to gain competitive intelligence.
Act as advocate to integrate thisknowledge into the group's research efforts.
Generate new research ordevelopment strategies to effectively address project and divisionalgoals/needs.
Collaborate with functional and technical experts to facilitatescientific achievement.
Publish project-related research in high-impact factorpeer-reviewed journals, R&D reports, patent applications and/or regulatorydocuments/filings.
Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate andDivisional Policies and procedures.
Position will be hired based on level of experience.
Bachelors, Masters, PhD in Organic Chemistry or related field with typically 10-12+ (BS), 8-10+ (MS) or 0-4+ (PhD) years of experience; Postdoctoral or pharmaceutical industry experience desirable.
Demonstrate the ability to resolve key scientific hurdles byeffectively utilizing available information and technical expertise.
Exceptional communication skills; ability to develop, implement andclearly communicate chemistry strategies and progress to team.
Build strong relationships with peers and cross functionally withpartners outside of teams to enable higher performance.
