To enable AbbVie’s emergence as a World Class R&D organization, the Senior Director, Project Management, plays a leadership role with the VP of Global Discovery (VP) and the Global Drug Discovery Leadership Team (GDD-LT). The incumbent will act as Chief of Staff to the VP and as strategist, consultant, and implementer to ensure streamlined processes that drive strategy within the organization based on business priorities. The incumbent will optimize the value of our portfolio of current and future assets and technology builds. Under the guidance of the VP, the incumbent is responsible for leading development of the long-range plan for Discovery. Achieving these goals requires a combination of excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, broad strategic thinking, and an ability to synthesize inputs and drive alignment in complex situations.


  • Serves as a core member of the GDD-LT as a strategic partner with VP and GDD-LT members, with responsibility for the GDD-LT. Responsible for the agenda and areas of focus, driving the overall long-term area strategy.

  • Partners with Business Development functions to undertake assessments consistent with area strategy.

  • Provides strategic input into the development of Discovery long-range plans, cross-functional and evaluations of potential Discovery initiatives.

  • Coordinates the generation of competitive environment assessments for review at GDD-LT to compile the data into useful working knowledge in support of Discovery strategic builds.

  • As appropriate, facilitates identification, evaluation, and implementation of novel tools and technologies (e.g., biomarkers, drug delivery systems, devices and other platform technologies) that can be employed to improve or accelerate pipeline progression in disease areas of interest.

  • In collaboration with relevant functions, drives internal and external stakeholder assessments in order to anticipate changes in the external environment.

  • Coordinates the collection and compilation of long-range strategic planning and portfolio documentation for Discovery, working in close collaboration with the VP, Decision Support Group.

  • Partners with GDD-LT leaders to identify, prioritize, and nurtures external collaborations (consortia, academic and scientific collaborations, key scientific leader advisors, etc.) in areas where we want to further our understanding of disease pathways and mechanisms.

  • Strategic critical partnership with the VP and the GDD-LT to ensure accountability, to ensure commitments are met in a high-quality fashion, and enable prioritization of time and schedule to focus on the most critical/impactful components.

  • Facilitate effective decision making, acting as the sounding board for new ideas and initiatives.

  • Participate in regular meetings with business HR partner to align on talent initiatives, potential staffing issues/gaps, ensure all staff issues are addressed.

  • Gather and assess inquiries directed to the VP; determine the proper course of action/partner with the appropriate Sr. Management Leader for resolution.

  • Act as delegate in meetings and on calls on the behalf of the VP Global Discovery when conflicts in schedules arise.

  • Representing the VP in optimal ways as the communication connection with other executives in the organization or major stakeholders.

  • Liaise with Public Affairs on first drafts of proposals, presentations, organizational messages

  • Capture key actions from meetings and ensure proper follow up / execution.

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree required. Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, MBA) highly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years (15+ years preferred) of research/development, commercial, project management, portfolio management, business development, or related experience in the pharmaceutical or technology industry with a track record of expertise in one or more therapeutic areas.

  • Recognized team player with proven facilitative leadership skills in a cross-functional global team environment. Proven performance in a matrix environment with ability to influence and align stakeholders.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact externally and internally to support business strategy.

  • Strong analytical skills. Recognized ability to evaluate complex issues from multiple perspectives to ensure that balanced risk assessments are made.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
