Responsible for multiple Discovery projects in support of R&D initiatives. Leads several multi-disciplinary global teams. Responsible for Discovery portfolio assessment and ensuring alignment between portfolio status and overall strategic objectives for Discovery. Anticipates challenges. Continually sets approaches to use newly proven methods or approaches to advance functional direction and effectiveness. Leads multi-disciplinary and cross functional programs/ projects successfully integrating research into broad business objectives. Actively supports open exchange of cross functional knowledge through extensive networking. Deepens insight to better anticipate and prioritize emerging business challenges enabling functional goal achievement. Responsible for leading a team who removes barriers so the scientists can focus on the pipeline and developing world class technologies through: project management, portfolio management, operations, compliance, regulatory submissions, and patent support.


  • Responsible for overall portfolio advancement and ensures functional effectiveness. Ensures quality and effectiveness of multiple projects by leading design, risk assessments, and implementation strategies to address current and future business needs.

  • Identifies, evaluates and implements external and cross functional collaborations. Serves as key communication interface for Discovery. Actively supports open exchange of cross-disciplinary and cross functional knowledge.

  • Actively collaborates with the Vice President of Discovery and the CoS, Interacts with Discovery and Development Sciences VP’s, Legal, and Scientific Governing Board Members

  • Drives and communicates strategy, elevates portfolio resource, and timing issues and bottlenecks. Directs one or more global multidisciplinary or cross functional projects.

  • In addition to managing direct team of approximately 40 members, manages indirect team of 12-25 scientists which includes PhDs and research professionals to drive Discovery initiatives and culture.

  • Responsible for Departmental and Initiative Budgets.

  • Expertise in field is sought across AbbVie functions and externally across areas of expertise. Uses expertise to generate internal and external networks to spark collaborations

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree required. Advanced degree (PharmD, PhD, MD, MBA) highly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years (15+ years preferred) of research/development, commercial, project management, portfolio management, business development, or related experience in the pharmaceutical or technology industry with a track record of expertise in one or more therapeutic areas.

  • Must be able to develop and execute innovative, informed, and effective solutions to inter/intra group/project conflicts, prioritization issues, and scientific setbacks.

  • Guides his/her department and project leaders to develop and execute innovative solutions to challenging scientific and personnel issues

  • Ensures that problems are analyzed from multiple perspectives including impact of changing scientific, clinical, regulatory and commercial environments.

  • Assists VP of Discovery and VPs of therapeutic areas in managing the monthly LBE and budget of Discovery. Partners with the VP of Discovery CoS to build long-range plan and plan updates focusing on budgetary components.

  • Effectively persuade employees and top management personnel to support or reject proposals.

  • Must be able to quickly adapt to a changing work and resource environment and still meet project/technology/initiatives commitments.
