Purpose Statement:

As part of the AbbVie R&D function, contribute to the development and launch of exciting new drug-device combination products. You will be involved in development of robust drug delivery systems, as well as building capabilities within the Electrical and Software engineering department. Independently conceive, execute and communicate novel multi-disciplinary research or development strategies that achieve project and area goals.

The position is based in Lake County, IL, US.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead design and development efforts associated with the electrical and software system components of drug delivery systems. Contribution will include:

  • Feasibility and initial development (Needs definition, requirements, technology assessment, landscaping, charter and business case)

  • System Architecture (system design, testing, analysis)

  • Electronics design assessments (circuit design, PCB assessment, testing requirements and equipment, circuit analysis)

  • Performance Analytical Modeling

  • Software assessment (embedded software, application software, mobile application, GUI, testing and integration, code reviews)

  • System Integration

  • Reliability Assessments

  • Verification Testing

  • Develop and lead program & product solutions to combine new digital health technologies (connected solutions, wearable technology, wireless technology platforms, etc).

  • Establish and maintain working knowledge of technology trends and how they are or can be made relevant to our business. Partner with external vendors to access future technology roadmaps.

  • Use appropriate project management techniques to ensure the successful completion of assigned projects as lead or as a participant.

  • Address key project and process issues and risks (define, analyze, resolve).

  • Ensures that products being developed both internally and externally are technically robust through engineering analysis, ensuring that products perform sufficiently and reliably.

  • Function skillfully as a key technical leader capable of driving consensus across functional groups to activate & execute projects.

  • Conform to ISO, FDA and other regulatory standards by working with the applicable functional areas.

  • Operate mostly independently, with latitude for independent judgment with some supervision while providing high quality output.

  • Demonstrates understanding and experience with product development and requirements management process, with demonstrated experience in generating design history file documentation to support development activities, including Design Inputs, Design Outputs, Protocols, Task Analysis and risk assessments. Manage the stage/gate process with associated documentation and approvals.

  • Responsible for supporting the lab team when necessary with tests, test set-ups, methods, investigations, etc. pertaining to engineering confidence tests and design verification tests.

  • Drives and/or participates in department continuous improvement initiatives focused on maximizing process efficiencies, and enhanced collaboration within and outside of the department.

  • Engage and collaborate with clinical, project development, audit, regulatory, and commercial teams, as well as, external engineering partners to ensure alignment across the organization throughout device development activities and deliverables.

  • BS and typically 14+ years of experience; MS and typically 12+ years of experience; PhD and typically 6+ years of experience.

  • Academic degree in electrical engineering is strongly preferred.

  • Has a technical background in health care, medical devices, pharmaceutical, biologics, or similar industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to function as a principle investigator, generating original technical ideas and research or development strategies.

  • Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors. Exercises judgment and advises management as to the appropriate actions.

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.
