This position leads and handles the corporate environmental, health & safety laboratory. This lab analyzes EHS samples taken throughout Abbvie for industrial hygiene (IH) and environmental monitoring. Accuracy and high quality results are critical, since results from these samples directly impact our employees, work places, the environment and regulatory compliance. The EHS laboratory also provides field work for programs at plant locations globally as requested.

  • Develops formal Industrial Hygiene and Environmental analysis methods for our products and pharmaceutical ingredients to accurately protect our employees, workplaces and maintain compliance. The lab develops these analytical methods to resolve and ensure that employee exposures are at an acceptable level so that injuries/ illnesses don’t occur and to support the Pharmaceuticals in the Environment (PIE) program.

  • Provide direct assistance across the network, operations, R&D, commercial and HQ, and EHS personnel globally, relative to accurate procedures and practices for the collection of samples. Design and maintain the corporations’ employee and environmental chemical exposure database. This database is used by health and safety professionals throughout the entire corporation for the recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical hazards in the workplace.

  • Formulate company-wide policies, guidelines, and practices including sample collection and laboratory services

  • Planning, selecting, developing and directing laboratory services staff, facilities, and equipment, along with budgeting and fiscal management of associated capital and expenses which represents over $1.5 million.

  • Planning, scheduling and management of the sample analysis program which balances over 4,000 samples per year. Ensuring that the samples are analyzed properly and accurately and in compliance with regulatory methods as applicable in order to protect our employees and the environments they work in, also to protect AbbVie in the legal liability area.

  • Maintain the lab's accreditation by the AIHA and NELAP, ensuring the successful analysis of quarterly proficiency testing samples and the biennial reaccreditation process. Identifying new technologies and strategies in the fields of IH and environmental chemistry/sampling and collaborating with EHS&S professionals to mitigate risks.

  • Approves and sanctions other contract labs for the analysis of our IH and environmental samples around the world.

  • Responsible for building exposure data which assures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and requirements for occupationalcompliance. Decisions made as to whether a potential employee health problem exists, which remedy is the best justification of resolution, and whether the remedy worked are predicated on data from this laboratory.

  • Assist plant staff with sampling techniques and analytical results. Direct field staff on inputting sampling data into the corporations’ employee and environmental chemical exposure database.

  • Responsible and accountable for the performance of expertly sound analyses and studies. Sample results obtained have a direct impact on both domestic and international manufacturing and R&D operations and upon the health and wellbeing of all AbbVie employees. The data serves as the basis for major economic decisions.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, environmental, biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene, chemistry, environmental, biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering.

  • 10+ years experience in the areas of industrial hygiene, environment and laboratory operations and at least 5 years’ experience in supervising and managing employees with Bachelor degree or 8 – 10 years in the areas of industrial hygiene, environment and laboratory operations and at least 5 years’ experience in supervising and managing employees with a masters degree

  • This is a highly technical position and requires a very detailed and thorough person who can also communicate very well and effectively with all levels of management.
