This position will support process safety at the R&D Pilot Plant and provide safety support for other functional areas located in Lake County. A main focus is providing additional support of process safety management for the Pilot Plant. Together with EHS, Operations & Engineering, the EHS Specialist will improve overall safety performance. This individual will support projects of varying scope that will encompass multiple aspects of Process Safety Management (PHA’s, MOC, hazard identification and mitigation, auditing, and incident investigation).

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Support Process Safety activities within the R&D Pilot Plant in alignment with AbbVie internal standards and OSHA PSM. Continuous development and improvement of programs will be a major focus.

  • Review Process Safety Information, assess hazards and recommend approaches that reduce employee’s exposure to work hazards.

  • Review and revise operating procedures with Process Safety implications, working with various teams within the organization.

  • Coordinate and assist with Process Safety Management programs, examples include:

  1. Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) including tracking and close out of action items.

  2. Management of Change (MOC) program is in place

  3. Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR) for new and modified equipment and processes.

  • Gather data for Process Safety Performance indicators.

  • Provide technical support on process safety matters and site projects including regulatory interpretation.

  • Provide overall safety support for other business areas as identified.

  • Support/build a culture of safety through employee engagement and participation.

  • Complete audits and inspections of areas supported.

  • Participate in incidents investigations, root cause determination and implementation of action plans.

  • Lead focused initiatives to improve safety.

  • Assist with contractor safety.

  • Perform industrial hygiene monitoring.

  • Develop and present EHS information to supported areas.

  • Updating procedures and training for Process Safety and other safety procedures and training as required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree(Chemical Engineering or related discipline: engineering, chemistry, science,safety).

  • One to three yearsof experience (Process Safety in pharmaceutical Pilot Plant or manufacturing preferred).

  • Knowledge of PHAtechniques (HazOp, What If…).

  • Ability to performindustrial hygiene monitoring.

  • Ability to workeffectively in a team environment; plan, organize, delegate and follow-up onwork flow, to meet goals and objectives.

  • Strong written andverbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with siteemployees at all levels.

  • Ability toresearch, analyze, interpret regulations/standards:OSHA, PSM, NFPA etc.
