AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV) is a global, research-based biopharmaceutical company formed in 2013 following separation from Abbott Laboratories. The company's mission is to use its expertise, dedicated people and unique approach to innovation to develop and market advanced therapies that address some of the world's most complex and serious diseases. AbbVie employs approximately 30,000 people worldwide and markets medicines in more than 170 countries
The Protein NMR group at AbbVie Headquarters in Lake County, Illinois is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join our Drug Discovery team. The ideal candidate should have extensive hands-on experience with high-resolution, protein NMR spectroscopy including set-up, troubleshooting, and interpretation of 1D and 2D NMR data, along with a solid understanding of overall spectrometer function and experience optimizing protein samples for NMR data collection. Experience with collection and analysis of 3D and 4D NMR data and/or experience with NMR-based fragment screening and in probing protein-ligand interactions by other techniques (i.e. ITC, NMR, TSA, etc) is also highly beneficial. The candidate should be able to work independently while contributing in a team environment, and can productively manage several projects simultaneously in a dynamic and rapidly evolving project landscape.
Design and perform NMR experiments for fragment screening (both 1D and 2D)
Work with protein biochemists to prepare protein samples for NMR-based fragment screening and/or NMR-based hit characterization
Set up of NMR spectrometer for collection of 1D and 2D screening data, and potentially, set up of spectrometer for collection of protein-ligand NOE data (2D, 3D, and 4D) to enable NOE-guided ligand docking
Set-up and troubleshoot 1D, 2D, and 3D experiments taken from the literature.
Apply NMR to help understanding of target biology and the mechanism of action of early hits and lead molecules as appropriate.
Together with other members of the group, evaluate and implement new NMR methods and new ways to apply NMR technology for drug discovery
Work with vendor, when necessary, to maintain and repair spectrometers
Communicate results of NMR-based fragment screens or NMR-based hit characterization to project teams
Present results at internal meetings and at external scientific meetings as appropriate
Routinely interact with scientists from therapeutic area project teams and core technology groups to develop and implement strategies to help advance programs
Work with molecular modelers, cheminformatics specialists, and synthetic chemists to enable fragment elaboration
Evaluate the scientific literature critically and adopt novel technologies which will facilitate NMR driven fragment-based drug discovery at AbbVie
Maintain accurate and timely records of experimental results
Level and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
BS, MS, or PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field
10+ (BS), 8+ (MS), or 0+ (PhD) years of relevant academic or industry experience is required
Experience in optimizing protein samples for NMR and protein NMR data collection and analysis
Extensive experience in high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, especially set-up, troubleshooting, and interpretation of 1D and 2D experiments
Sound knowledge in structural biology and protein science
Must be detail oriented and meticulous regarding documentation and data management
Ability to work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel and rapidly adjust to changing priorities
Key Leadership Competencies
Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners to enable higher performance.

Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo.
Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
Embraces the ideas of others, nurtures innovation and manages innovation to reality.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.
