The AbbVie Experiential Internship Program

Asan AbbVie Experiential Intern, you'll participate in a paid, ten to twelve-week summer program that is focused on providing students with robust projects throughout the summer. As an intern, you will be located at our corporate headquarters in north suburban Chicago, with housing and shuttle services for eligible students.

Department Overview – Translational Imaging (ZR13)

The Translational Imaging team is responsible for in vivo imaging studies to support advancing pipeline compounds toward the clinic. The team is comprised of teams that cover human imaging studies, a radiochemistry production team, labs for MRI, PET and SPECT imaging, and a pharmacology suite to support and validate potential new tracers or companion diagnostics.

Assignment Details

PET radioligand discovery efforts often rely on the prior existence of a radiolabeled in vitro tool molecule. Mass spectrometry (MS) based methods to triage potential radioligands will lessen dependence on radiochemistry support (nonradioactive isotopes are used) and may accelerate the identification of tool radioligands. Using tau imaging in Alzheimer’s disease as a test system, the student will compare a series of well-characterized paired helical filament (PHF) tau radioligands for binding to human brain tissue in novel tissue-based assays and construct a correspondence between their known PHF affinities and their observed abundance in target-bearing tissues. Multiple methods will be employed including a combination of filter binding and laser capture micro-dissection followed by LC-MS based detection. These results will guide the student’s further use of novel MS based tools such as flow-probe microfluidic sampling and in-house MS imaging methods (MALDI/DESI). The student will also gain experience with in vitro pharmacology techniques and cryostat preparation of post-mortem brain samples. The student’s work will benefit AbbVie through the development of nonradioactive -compound screening methods for PET radioligand discovery (e.g. alpha synuclein). This internship will provide an opportunity for the student to work across multidisciplinary groups in the ISAT and DCAT organizations
