AbbVie’s Search and Evaluation group supports AbbVie’s global external innovation efforts by identifying and interrogating strategic opportunities for academic collaborations, venture investments, in-licensing, co-promotion/co-marketing, and acquisitions. The group is responsible for coordinating search efforts throughout AbbVie’s R&D community, and conducting thorough technical due diligence activities that ensure an in-depth understanding of investment opportunities and provide effective decision-making tools for the organization. The S&E group includes teams dedicated to supporting key therapeutic areas of interest to AbbVie, as well as, has responsibility for the establishment of academic collaborations supporting one or multiple therapeutic areas or technologies. In addition, S&E works closely with AbbVie’s affiliates across the globe to network and scout regionally for external innovation.

Job Description: As Director, Search and Evaluation, Scout/Coordinator Western Europe, the successful candidate will contribute to driving the strategies and tactics to build AbbVie’s academic and biotech relationships and external visibility across the region, focusing on key Western EU countries. While formally reporting through to the Global Head of Academics, Search and Evaluation in Lake County (HQ), the individual’s primary responsibility will be to effectively interface and have a strong working relationship with all the relevant key stakeholders and business partners within the respective Affiliates. It will also be important for this individual to effectively interface and have a strong working relationship with the HQ S&E Therapeutic Area Leads. This person will also work to build a deep awareness of the therapeutic area BD strategies, and will build and leverage a network of connections in the academic and biotech community to raise awareness of AbbVie’s partnering objectives and capabilities in these regions. The person will work constructively with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to ensure effective communication, efficient decision-making, and completion of transactions in a timely manner. Specific primary responsibilities include:

  • Initiate, nurture and leverage relationships with companies, academics, research institutes and other external stakeholders in key Western EU countries

  • Identify and filter relevant BD opportunities, based on intimate knowledge of global strategies and priorities.

  • External stakeholder mapping, prioritization and engagement roadmap in line with global and local priorities – developed in collaboration with HQ S&E stakeholders and affiliates

  • Act as the primary connection back to HQ S&E stakeholders and between HQ S&E and the relevant Affiliates

  • Front-line coordination with Area and Affiliate Innovation Reputation Network team (IRN) on local reputation agenda and innovation emerging from external sources in line with local & global strategies and priorities.

  • Help to coordinate local events across the various relevant Affiliates in partnership with the appropriate local internal stakeholders and HQ for such venues as key scientific/partnering meeting attendance, speakers from Global at key affiliate-sponsored events as well as provide visibility to Global visits in-country.


  • To effectively contribute to these activities, the candidate will need to have a record of establishing relationships between academic institutions and industry in Western Europe. This would include possessing an extensive network within the academic medical community, especially with technology transfer and corporate transfer offices.

  • 10+ years industrial with 5+ years of experience working in a large multi-national pharmaceutical company directly working in a role that requires coordination internally, with experience interfacing with Academic Technology Transfer Offices and Biotechs desirable.

  • MD, PhD, or PharmD with broad research, clinical development, or medical affairs experience. Direct Oncology, and/or Immunology background a plus. Knowledge of intellectual property and governmental/regulatory positions within the region.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in direct and cross-functional roles.

  • A creative thinker with the willingness and ability to forge novel collaborative structures building the capabilities and reputation of Abbvie in the region.

  • Familiarity with business development databases, as well as web-based and social media communication tools.

  • Must have excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Experience in interacting with executive-level management.
